As their name suggests, they are more pronounced when smiling. These lines become deeper and more visible with age as a result of the reduction in facial fat and loss of collagen and elastin. When a younger person stops smiling, the face quickly returns to normal with no visible lines as the skin's natural elasticity (provided by the collagen) allows it to spring back into place. With age, as collagen levels reduce, the skin loses its elasticity and the smile lines remain in place even after the smile has gone.

Treatment
